For years we have been going to Block Island (off the coast of Rhode Island) every Memorial Day to celebrate our wedding anniversary. This year is our 24th anniversary; I'm not sure how long we have been going to Block Island but I would guess at least since our 5th anniversary. We always stay in an upstairs apartment of Mitchell Cottage, Pat and Tom Doyle's house near Old Harbor.
We bike around the island and hang out on the beaches. I love watching the small waves approach, then occasionally and unpredictably send up a big splash as they reach the rocks.
I also really like the sound of waves going out, pulling the rounded beach stones with them as they retreat. Click here for my little movie
We have all played with the muddy clay on Clay Head beach, but Sarah and Amy have become the expert sculptors.
And this year Sarah created a new dramatic art form using Pringles potato chips.
We take a picture like the one below of Rebecca and Sarah every year (and always dispute whether this is the spot where we take the picture, or whether it's lower down below the pond). The joke is that if we were to pull out this picture from each year's trip, we could make a flip-book and watch the girls grow!
We were accompanied this year by Rebecca's boyfriend Philip
and Sarah's boyfriend Joe
both of whom are great travel companions and really nice guys.
Ah. Warm weather, good food, lots of sleep, and New England island relaxation.
